“What happened, then?” I tried again. “Something had to have happened or your precious walrus-mutts wouldn’t have run off.”

“If you really know where Bugs and Bunny are, you have three seconds to tell me, or I take back my offer and start breaking hooli-things. And since you’re the only hooli-baby here . . .”

I honestly didn’t know what to say. So I gave in to the old-lady lip-kisser. Plus, the longer his monsters were in the truck, the greater chance there was they’d leave some presents on the seat for the truck’s owner.

“They may or may not be locked in an old truck on Doctor Dan’s street. It’s two streets over that way,” I point.

“An old truck?” Rock’s one eyebrow shot up. “How’d they get locked in an old truck?”

“None of your beeswax.”

As Rock left I noticed he was limping. He was in a hurry so I didn’t get to ask why he was walking like a weasel with a wedgie.

Mom came over and put her arm around me.

“Your dad just called me, and they’re on their way back,” she said. “Things look under control out here. Let’s get you inside, you look like a drowned muskrat—and I’m sure I do, too.”

“What about Penny and her family?” I asked.

“They’re headed to her uncle’s house on the other side of town,” she replied.

My football watch beeped. Three in the morning. I couldn’t believe I’d been up almost all night! I had always wondered what it would feel like. Turns out, it felt kind of noodle-y. I mean, my body felt like a wet noodle, all out of energy and wet from the rain.

“This day has been a doozy and left me a little dizzy. Let’s get you to bed,” Mom said.
